A longer list of things I’ve written is below, but here are some highlights which I’m especially proud of:
Andrew Phung: Comedy is for everyone (NEXT Magazine, Fall 2024)
I wrote this as part of a preview for the “Comedy is Art” festival at the Theatre Centre in October 2024, after having a great chat with Andrew Phung about the state of the Canadian comedy industry. This happened right after his hit CBC show, Run the Burbs, wasn’t picked up for a fourth season. Read it on NEXTmag.ca
Scott Thompson brings Buddy Cole show to Sketchfest with material censored by Amazon (NEXTmag.ca)
I grew up idolizing the Kids in the Hall, and Scott Thompson in particular. After the Kids in the Hall revival season on Amazon Prime, I got to chat with (mostly gush to) him about how significant his character Buddy Cole was to me as a teenager in a small town. We talked about how Amazon had rejected every single Buddy Cole monologue he pitched for the new season as too offensive or controversial, but that’s nothing new for a character that’s been criticized from both the religious right and Toronto’s LGBTQ+ community since the late 80’s. As he puts it to me: “They pulled my material to protect people like me from people like me.” Read it on NEXTmag.ca
Your neighbourhood military manufacturer (NEXT Magazine, Spring 2024)
Much of what I wrote for this piece ended up being cut from the print issue and the lede was completely rewritten by the editor, though some of my original copy was added back to the digital version. Nonetheless, the research, interviews, and profiles on each manufacturer are my own. I also contributed to the spread’s layout and design. I conducted several interviews with activists and protesters who had been demonstrating against Canada’s complicity in the international arms trade, and more specifically, Israel’s war on Gaza. I also had to chase each of the firms for comment—and worry about drawing the ire of their respective legal departments. It’s the first piece I’ve ever written that made me worry about being put on a list. It’s also the first piece I’ve written to have gone viral, as many of those same activists helped to boost it on social media. After this issue came out, I attended an event for my partner’s union local at U of T, and I had my first experience of meeting a stranger in the wild who had read something I’d written when they mentioned coming across this piece on Instagram.
